Fly Tying Classes:

"Beyond the Basics"


Each of the three-hour sessions listed below is designed to help the improving tyer refine and expand his/her fly tying skill set.

 

Students will learn and practice two different fly patterns each week, and will also have the opportunity to explore variations of the flies tied.

 

Each session is independent of the others:  take one, two, or all three as you wish.

 

Please Note:  These Classes are Not Suitable for Beginners 

Session 1:  February 7, 2010 9 a.m. - 12 noon

    Lefty's Deceiver & Clouser Deep Minnow

 

Session 2:  February 21, 2010 9 a.m. - 12 noon

  Copper John & Bar BWO Flashback Emerger

 

Session 3:  February 28, 2010  9 a.m. - 12 noon

         Adams Dry Fly & Ausable Wulff

 

Tools & Materials:  Tools are not supplied but may be purchased by the student at a 10% discount. 

Required tools are as follows:  Vise, scissors, thread bobbin, dubbing needle, half-hitch tool, whip finisher (Matarelli-type preferred), hair stacker, dubbing spinner, hair comb, head cement.

 

Materials will be provided for the flies to be tied in class.  Additional materials may be purchased at a 10% discount.

 

Fee:  $34.95 per session

All three sessions: $99.00

Modules


Module 1:  "Working with Dubbing"

Sunday, March 7, 2010  9 a.m. - 12 noon

 

In this intermediate-level class you will learn how to choose and use a variety of dubbing materials & techniques to produce whatever kind of dubbed body is desired - for small flies or large, chunky or slender, smooth or shaggy.  We'll cover some helpful tips & tricks for making durable dubbed bodies. 

 

Module 2:  "Choosing & Using Hackle"

Sunday, March 21, 2010  9 a.m. - 12 noon

 

In this intermediate-level class you will learn about the wide variety of hackle products & their uses, a complex subject made even more so by the modern genetic hackle revolution.  Rooster or hen, saddle or neck, poultry or game bird, strung or skin - we'll show you what types of hackle are suited to what types of flies.

Tools & Materials:  Tools are not supplied.  Materials will be provided for the flies to be tied in class.  Tools & materials are available for purchase the day of the class at a 10% discount.
